Creamy Horseradish Sauce
This flavorful and creamy Horseradish Sauce rivals anything I’ve had at a high-end steakhouse and it is so easy to make! You only need a few minutes and a handful of pantry and fridge staple ingredients. Serve it over your favorite prime rib, steak, or classic beef tenderloin.

This Beats Any Horseradish Sauce I’ve Had at a Steakhouse!
This steakhouse-style horseradish sauce is sharp, tangy, and insanely creamy. I make my horseradish sauce with both sour cream and mayo so it’s super rich without tasting too heavy, and prepared horseradish so it’s nice and pungent.
Using this horseradish sauce for prime rib is a non-negotiable in our house, but it’s also delicious on steaks, beef tenderloin, roast beef, corned beef, baked potatoes, you name it!
It lasts up to 1 week in the fridge and tastes the best after it’s had a full day to chill in the fridge and let the flavors meld. If you’ve been buying bottled horseradish sauce until now, you’re going to LOVE this homemade version!

The 7 Ingredients You’ll Need
You can find the full list of ingredients, quantities & method in the recipe card at the end of the page.
- Prepared horseradish. This can typically be found in the refrigerated section (sometimes near the seafood!). It’s grated fresh horseradish that’s been preserved with vinegar, salt, and sometimes a little sugar. It’s strong and pungent — exactly what you need for this recipe! (Do NOT use cream-style horseradish, which is found in the condiment aisle of your grocery store and already contains dairy and other ingredients.)
- Mayonnaise. Adds richness and tones down the pungent horseradish.
- Sour cream. Provides a nice tanginess and prevents the sauce from being too rich.
- Dijon mustard. Adds a little more tang and deepens the flavor of the sauce.
- Lemon juice. Brightens things up without making the sauce taste too acidic.
- Fresh chives. A pop of fresh onion flavor cuts through the rich mayo.
- Worcestershire sauce. Deepens the flavor. It’s a crucial ingredient, so don’t skip it!
Jenny’s Tip: If you’re a horseradish lover like I am, use the leftover prepared horseradish to make a batch of tangy horseradish mashed potatoes!

How to Make Homemade Horseradish Sauce
When I tell you this recipe couldn’t be easier to make, I mean it! All you have to do is get all the ingredients in a mixing bowl, give them a good whisk, season to taste with salt and pepper, and you’re done!
However, horseradish sauce gets better as it sits. I like to make it several hours (or even 24 hours!) before I plan to serve it and I just store it in an airtight container in the fridge.
