Homemade Pizza Sauce

easy homemade pizza sauce

I’m a huge fan of making homemade pizza, but what’s pizza without a great pizza sauce recipe? My easy recipe for homemade pizza sauce uses only a handful of ingredients (mostly pantry staples!) to make a sauce that will rival your favorite pizza parlor.

Helpful Tools & Key Recipe Ingredients

You can find the full list of ingredients, quantities & method in the recipe card at the end of the page.

  • Crushed tomatoes. If you can find them, san marzano tomatoes are the best! You can also use whole peeled tomatoes and crush them by hand or in a food processor.
  • Garlic. For this pizza sauce recipe, I use whole garlic cloves grated on a microplane instead of jarred minced garlic.
  • Spices. To give the sauce an Italian flavor while still letting the tomato flavor shine, I use oregano and crushed red pepper flakes for spice.
  • Sugar. A tiny bit of sugar help balance out the acidity of the tomatoes.
  • Butter. A bit of butter added at the end smooths out the finished pizza sauce.

How to Make Homemade Pizza Sauce in 2 Easy Steps

  1. Saute the aromatics. Using grated garlic instead of minced really allows it to melt into the sauce! We start by cooking the garlic in olive oil for a minute or two until it’s fragrant, then add spices for the last minute or so to bring out their oils.

Jenny’s Tip: Keep a close eye on your garlic in the pan because it goes from fragrant to burnt very quickly!

  1. Add the crushed tomatoes and simmer. Once everything is fragrant, add in the crushed tomatoes with a bit of sugar to balance the acid, and simmer until the sauce is thick. At the end, season the pizza sauce with salt and pepper and you’re done!

Prep Time: 10 minutes
Cook Time: 20 minutes
Total Time: 30 minutes
Makes: 3 cups

Ingredients

  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 3 cloves garlic, grated on a Microplane
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons dried oregano
  • 1/2 teaspoon crushed red pepper flakes
  • 28 oz crushed tomatoes
  • 1 teaspoon sugar
  • 1 tablespoon unsalted butter
  • Kosher salt and freshly ground pepper, to taste

Instructions

  • Heat the olive oil over medium heat in a saucepan. Add the garlic and cook for 2 minutes, stirring often, until fragrant. Add the oregano and crushed red pepper and cook for 1 minute. Once fragrant, add the crushed tomatoes and sugar and reduce the heat to low.
  • Simmer for 20 minutes, until thickened. Stir in the butter and season to taste with salt and pepper and cool to room temperature.

Storage Instructions

  • Cool your pizza sauce to room temperature and store in the fridge in an airtight container for up to 5 days.
To freeze, store the sauce in a freezer-safe ziplock bag, pressing out as much of the air as possible. Freeze flat for up to 6 months and defrost overnight in the fridge before using.
