An Easy Potato Side Dish Recipe

These sweet potato fries are so addictive! They’re subtly spiced and perfectly seasoned and once they’re hot out of the oven, they’re topped with cilantro and cotija.

I’ve had a lot of less-than-great sweet potato fries. Some are mushy, some are bland, some are undercooked. This recipe is none of those things!

If you follow my tips, you’ll be enjoying delicious and flavorful sweet potato fries in no time! These are fresh, easy to customize, and only take as long to prep as it takes you to chop them up!

Why You’ll Love These Sweet Potato Fries

Quick – On busy weeknights, you need a quick and easy side dish that the whole family will love! These sweet potato fries only take a couple of minutes of prep and some time in the oven or air fryer. An easy side leaves you plenty of time to work on the main course. Did I mention these are kid approved?

Easy – All you need for these sweet potato fries are sweet potatoes, olive oil, and your favorite spices! I always lean towards paprika, cumin, and a bit of sumac for these but they’re easy to customize to your tastes.

Healthy – Baked or air fried sweet potato fries are way healthier than fried french fries. They’re a great side dish option that get your family to eat extra veggies without realizing it.

How to Make Sweet Potato Fries

You’re going to love this easy, healthy side dish recipe! You can oven bake sweet potato fries or fry them in the air fryer. Both options are amazing!

Tools Needed

Ingredients and Substitutions

  • Sweet potato. You can either peel, or not peel the sweet potatoes. Totally up to you!
  • Spices. Use your favorite here! I did a combo of paprika, cumin, and sumac.
  • Olive oil. I love the flavor of olive oil, but you can use any neutral oil as well.
  • Toppings. A bit of cotija and chopped cilantro add great flavor to the finished sweet potato fries.
  • Skyr or yogurt. Making the dipping sauce with yogurt keeps these healthy!
  • Mayonnaise. A little bit of mayo or light mayo adds the perfect amount of richness.
  • Chipotle peppers. They’re smoky and a little spicy–perfect for balancing the sweetness of the fries.
  • Honey. I love balancing out the spiciness with a bit of sweetness.
  • Garlic. Garlic makes everything better! You could swap in garlic powder if necessary.

The Process

  • Step one: Peel (or don’t peel) your sweet potatoes and cut them into matchsticks. You want them to be about 1/3″ thick.
  • Step two: In a mixing bowl, toss the fries with the olive oil, spices, salt, and pepper.
  • Step three: Lay the sweet potato fries on a baking sheet in a single layer. You may need to use two baking sheets, depending on how many you make.
  • Step four: Bake 25-30 minutes at 425 F, flipping halfway through. The sweet potato fries should be browned, but not burnt. Remove them from the oven and sprinkle with the cotija and cilantro.
  • Step five: To make the chipotle dipping sauce, combine all the ingredients in a small food processor and blend until smooth.

Tips for Making Sweet Potato Fries

Cut your fries evenly. Keeping the fries all the same size means they cook evenly. Take care when cutting so that all the fries are the same size. This little extra bit of work and care will yield best results.

Brown the fries. Sweet potatoes have natural sugars and so they have to brown at least a bit. You’ll notice that the fries are blistered in some areas, this is good! You just want to make sure they aren’t blackened because then they’re burned.

Flip the fries halfway through. This is an essential step to make sure they get browned on both sides. Even if you’re using an air fryer, you still want to flip the fries so they cook evenly on all sides.

The Best Chipotle Sauce

If you’re unfamiliar with skyr, get ready to have your life changed! It’s an amazingly creamy, rich, and nourishing yogurt-like product from Iceland. Skyr has been enjoyed in Iceland for thousands of years and makes the perfect addition to desserts, breakfasts, and sauces.

This recipe uses Skyr from ICELANDIC PROVISIONS–the creamiest skyr on the market to make our chipotle sauce extra creamy and tangy. Not sure where to find skyr? Check out this helpful product locator HERE.

Air Frying Sweet Potato Fries

Using an air fryer or the oven both yield great results here! I prefer using a countertop air fryer oven because the racks allow you to spread the fries out while cooking.

If using an air fryer: Preheat to 400 F. Lay the seasoned sweet potato matchsticks in the basket–take care not to over crowd. Cook for 12 minutes, flip and cook for another 12-15 minutes until the fries are browned in spots and cooked through. You may have to fry in batches depending on how many you’re making.
